A Fishing We Did Go

In late July Mia, John, Buck and I went to the west coast of Vancouver Island to stay at Kyuquot Beach (kai-you-cut) house which is across a span of water from the First Nation village of Kyuquot. There are several other fishing lodges and a small general store in the bay. The area is quite remote with the only access by boat or seaplane. We drove to Fair Harbour and then had a 45 minute boat ride to the lodge. Supplies for the village and lodges come in on a boat called the UChuck that takes passengers and operates weekly during the summer. I believe it also operates weekly during the winter, weather permitting. According to one of the fishing guides the weather can get so wild during the winter that people from the village cannot get across to the store. Only 3 people live year around in the fishing lodge area. Hardy souls!
Scenery on our drive in to Fair Harbour.

Old wharf with a small tree growing on it

Sign at Fair Harbour - pretty clear eh?

A fish shaped shadow..is it a good fishing omen?

Where we are going

Where we have been.

We saw lots of rock formations, like this one, with trees growing on them.
Approaching Kyuquot. This man is hauling home some firewood.

The most beautiful of the fish - I think it is a yellow eye rockfish
